Xeoma web server7/14/2023 ![]() ![]() This would probably be the most expensive, but I did see another post where someone bought a really small/slim pc which would fit well in my rack, but would need an external USB3 drive for the storage.Ĥ) If my current server is not enough, I'd love to be able to do something like this with a Raspberry PI cluster, but I wouldn't know where to begin there, or if there is even any software that would really work for something like this. I'd also probably add a WD Purple drive for this data.Ģ) Buy a dedicated NVR, with all software, etc, ready to go.ģ) Buy a new computer just for this task. I'd need to buy a PoE switch, but I could dedicate one of my server's NICs to the PoE nick to keep everything on the same switch and not send all the cam data across the rest of the network. My thinking is that more pixels = better chance of catching any identifying details.ġ) Use my existing home server. For the sides, which are narrower, that would seem a waste. I'm leaning toward 4MP cams - at least for the front, maybe 3MP for the sides, as the main difference between 3 and 4 that I have seen seemed to be a wider resolution without it being taller. (I'm not actually that paranoid, I just enjoy playing with tech.:laugh In total, I can see myself having anywhere from 8 to 12 cams in the near future. I may also want something inside to watch entry points. I am thinking two to cover different angles of the front yard and driveway, one somewhat subtly taking the place of the peephole in my front door (I'd rather not have something as obvious as the Ring doorbell), one or two on each side, and maybe two more in back. Since I've become aware of what seems to be an increasing amount of burglary activity in the neighborhoods around me, I want to put a number of IP cams around my house. I have not tried them on this computer, so I have no idea how much they might bog down the system. There's also a high likelihood that I would occasionally be running some intense Matlab-like jobs. During those times, I have never felt the slightest sluggishness from with anything I'm doing in a terminal session, though it's clear that the HandBrake processes each take longer to run. It spends most of its time with pretty low load, but there have been times when I've run HandBrake to re-encode 4 different video files at the same time, bringing the system load up to around 35. ![]() I have room to add 3 more drives on the system and in the case. It's got an i7-6700k (4core/8thread processor with 64G RAM (I may have gone a little overboard there), 2xSSD for the OS, and 4x4T drives in RAID-5 for data storage, and 2xGigE. I have a Windows laptop for my general use (like writing this), but the home server acts as a file store and media server for now, and I intend to add in home automation. I currently have a home Linux server, and I am wondering if it would be sufficient for the task of reliably capturing and processing the video feeds and being able to alert, as appropriate. If I did, it would most likely be running Linux, not Windows. I'm leaning toward the computer, because it seems like it's got a lot more flexibility, plus I like to be more in control of the software (IT/software engineer here). I'm now trying to decide if I should use a computer or an NVR for the collection of the streams. I just bought a DS-2CD2342WD-I and ordered a DS-2CD2345-I, which should be here in about a week or so, to compare features and performance for my area before deciding on the rest. I'm new to the world of home security / IP cams. ![]()

![]() ![]() He believes that bad things happen and bad things happen to kids and that’s present in all of his books: an awareness.” “People talk about kids like they’re really innocent,” said Henry, “but I always say that the reason why Roald Dahl’s books have been so successful for so many years is because Roald Dahl doesn’t pretend that the world is a good place. While this book is intended for adults, not children, Henry doesn’t spare the horror because of the characters’ young age. “But, you know, the more I started thinking about it and the more I started writing, the darker it became … I thought the only thing that’s that deep and viscious is a relationship where you used to love the person.” “When I started thinking about this book a few years ago, I had originally intended that maybe it would be like a steampunk thing and it would be a little bit more light-hearted,” said Henry. If we can’t imagine ourselves making the same choices and feeling the same things as Jamie, were we in his shoes. This book would not work if we didn’t believe in Jamie’s humanity, if we didn’t understand in an emotional sense what makes him turn against Peter. ![]() This book will break your heart, and it’s the empathy on every page that will do it. Henry believes in the vital humanity of this proto-Captain Hook, thus so does the reader. Reading this book, it’s not hard to understand why this is the first book that made Henry cry while writing it. And, obviously, Peter’s a charismatic leader. “One of the things I was trying to get at in the book,” said Henry, “is the way groups of boys can be both really brutal with each other in a careless way, but also really tender and how they’ll tend to follow the most charismatic leader. ![]() It’s this empathetic, relationship-driven question that drives the thrust of the Lost Boy narrative, and makes the book a fascinating exploration of boyhood, friendship, and the intersection of the two. “Why does this adult hate this kid?” It was a question that sparked a novel. “I always say, if there was no Henry, then there would be no Lost Boy.” “All those times I was experiencing Peter Pan with him, I started thinking, why does Captain Hook hate Peter Pan so much?” Henry said. They would watch the 1953 Disney animated film and read the story over and over again. Where did the idea for Lost Boy come from? Henry has an 11-year-old son who was obsessed with the story of Peter Pan when he was five. But, as Jamie begins to become disillusioned by The Island and Peter’s games, all of that changes. They have been together literally longer than Jamie can remember. When the novel begins, he loves Peter best of all. Jamie is that character, a nurturing type who looks after the other Lost Boys while Peter plays his games. Lost Boy is a gory, gutting retelling, one that would not work without a strong central character we know, like, and understand. I wanted to know about who he was before he was Hook.” “The ground of Hook as an adult has been walked by many other writers and filmmakers,” Henry told Den of Geeklast week at San Diego Comic Con. Here, Peter is not a reckless, innocuous youth who never wants to grow up he is a dangerous sociopath who values his games and eternal youth above all else. Through his young eyes, we see Neverland and Peter Pan like never before. The story of Lost Boy.Īs advertised, Lost Boy tells the story of Jamie, the original Lost Boy and the boy who will become Captain Hook. The characters and world of Peter Pan is in safe hands. I should not have doubted author Christina Henry, who also successfully added to and commented upon Alice in Wonderland canon with her novels Alice and Red Queen. Not only is Peter Pan one of my favorite stories of all time, but I worried that this book was simply jumping on the Villain Retelling Bandwagon. I was predisposed not to like Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook, a Peter Pan prequel from the point-of-view of Captain Hook. ![]() Portable transistor radio7/14/2023 ![]() In the collections at the American History Museum resides one of the original Regency models, donated in 1984 by Dr. Texas Instruments supplied the transistors to Idea Inc., who designed, produced, and-three years later-finally debuted the Regency TR-1 in November 1954, just in time for the holiday-shopping season. The answer came 1951, when two companies teamed up to begin researching a new idea: a small, portable radio. The question is, when could they make it happen?” ![]() “But it was obvious to everybody that consumer grade radios based on transistors would be a good thing. “The military is buying all of these things they can get their hands on,” says Harold Wallace, a curator at the National Museum of American History. military, recognizing the transistors’ potential to improve everything from radars to rockets, quickly seized on the new technology-to such a degree, in fact, that several years went by before it was applied to consumer products. For this, all three would be awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics. While the devices of the time relied primarily on the more delicate, energy-inefficient vacuum tube technology, the transistor, which used semiconductor materials to amplify electronic signals, allowed for products that were smaller, more durable, and more easily produced. It was in December 1947 that engineers John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley debuted the transistor effect, the building block for all modern electronic devices, at Bell Labs headquarters in Murray Hill, New Jersey. would have been in vain,” he wrote.Īmong the technologies to develop from this burst of wartime innovation was radar, wizardry that would eventually lead to the the transistor. ![]() ![]() The race between the Allies and the Axis powers to achieve technological and innovative advancements was what Churchill called the “Wizard War.” Without science and technology “all the prowess of the fighting airmen. A ROT13 Cipher is similar to a Caesar Cipher, but with a fixed shift of 13 letters. It can easily be solved with the Caesar Cipher Tool. A Caesar Cipher is a special kind of cryptogram, in which each letter is simply shifted a number of positions in the alphabet.Frequency analysis can be used to find the most commonly used letters.Instead of spaces, a letter like X can be used to separate words. The first know usage for entertainment purposes occured during the Middle Ages. dCode can decode or encode messages with various symbols to replace our usual latin alphabet. It can also generate barcodes or QR-Code. A more detailed description you can find here. This translation tool will help you easily convert between numbers and letters. With this converter you can encrypt and decrypt an input text with ROT ciphers. However, there are more options such as ASCII codes, tap codes or even the periodic table of elements to decode numbers. Cryptograms originally were intended for military or personal secrets. dCode can speak hundreds of languages and lots of codes like Morse code, the A1,Z26 code, but also 1337 (Leet Speak) or the Braille alphabet. Numbering the letters so A1, B2, etc is one of the simplest ways of converting them to numbers.A1, B2,, Z26) while non-alphabet characters are being dropped. Please inform the text/word to decode Key (ROT): Emperor Julius Caesar developed one of the simplest and most well-known forms of cryptography. By default we use ROT13 (key 13), you can change this. In both cases, a letter is not allowed to be substituted by itself. To translate Morse code manually you'll need to have basic knowledge of dit/dots and dahs/dashes. This translating tool also allows you to listen to the Morse code audio. The good news is that it’s simple to decode (and you can use our tool below if you really don’t want to try for yourself). The American Cryptogram Association (ACA) uses the names Aristocrat (a cryptogram that includes separators between words) or Patristocrat (a cryptogram that doesn't separate words). With the MorseTranslator tool, you can easily translate text to Morse code and any Morse code to text. When you want to dig deeper into the problem, an CLI is in my opinion always a bit harder to read due to the limitations in Size and Formatting it naturally has.Īnother disadvantage is that you need to scroll to the interesting parts after every test execution. When testing the CLI, for me, is just a good point to get an overview if all tests were running fine or if there were a Problem. Now let's get into the topic for this Article. So go ahead and try it out! Why should I Use Vitest UI?Įnough introduction about Vitest. Long Intro Short, Vitest is the 2022 testing tool the Frontend Community deserves. Vitest shares a lot of concepts with jest, which also makes the change superfast. It lets me freeze when thinking back to the dark days when I tried to set up Jest for TypeScript the first time. Vite immediately builds this changes, and all tests affected by those changes are executed in less than a minute.įor me, coming from jest, Vitests performance and simple configuration is a massive win and make TDD a lot more fun. Vitest recognizes when changes were done. ![]() What made Vitest the testing tool of choice for my applications is the super Fast HMR. Which means that your tests run in the same Environment as your application does, which make a lot more sense to me. This includes incredible features like sharing the same config () with your SUT. It is strongly focusing on providing the best possible developer experience. So instead of setting up three tools, you just need a single tool to test your application. ![]() like Babel and bundles test dependencies like webpack. Which means it is a test runner like jest, trantranspiles TypeScript, ESM etc. It combines three things that could cause problems into one. Vitest is a superfast unit-testing framework powered by Vite. It is developed by Evan You, the creator of Vue.js Anthony Fu, vite and vitest core team member patak and 533 more amazing developers. Vite has the power to immediately start up and do HMR in no time, even for large scale applications. Vite is a new frontend build tool with an insane performance.
